The current H5N1 influenza A virus has infected an impressive array of mammals. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s worse (for mammals at least) than previous H5N1 influenza strains, as the higher number of spillover infections in mammals may just be because there are so many infected birds involved in this ongoing outbreak.
